Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®

Complete, practical, and secure step-by-step onboarding guide to get your Trezor® hardware wallet ready to use.

Quick start — what you will accomplish

In about 10–20 minutes you'll unbox your device, install and open Trezor Suite, initialize a new wallet (or restore one), apply firmware updates, and secure your recovery seed. Follow each step precisely to keep your crypto safe.

Unbox & Verify

When your Trezor device arrives, check packaging and tamper-evident seals before opening. Purchase only from trezor.io or an authorized reseller. If packaging appears opened, damaged, or tampered with, stop and contact support.

What's in the box

Important: Never accept a used device. A brand-new Trezor will show the initial welcome screen on first boot; if it already contains a wallet, return it and contact support.

Install & Open Trezor Suite (Official)

Trezor Suite is the official app to manage your device. Always download from trezor.io/start. You can use the web app or download the desktop installer for Windows, macOS, or Linux.

  1. Go to trezor.io/start and choose Trezor Suite.
  2. Download the correct installer for your OS and install the app.
  3. Open Trezor Suite — you will be presented with onboarding options.

Security tip: Verify the website URL and HTTPS certificate. Do not use links from social media, email offers, or third-party forums.

Initialize Your Device — Create or Restore

When prompted in Trezor Suite you may Create a new wallet or Recover an existing one. Choose carefully:

Create a new wallet

  1. Select Create new in Trezor Suite.
  2. Follow the on-device instructions to generate a recovery seed (typically 12 or 24 words depending on device and options).
  3. Write the seed plainly on the provided recovery card exactly as shown — word order matters.
  4. Confirm the seed on the device when asked.

Restore from an existing seed

  1. Choose Recover wallet in Trezor Suite.
  2. Enter your recovery words using the device interface (not your computer keyboard when possible).
  3. Confirm restoration and wait for accounts to rescan.

Never enter your recovery seed into a website or cloud service. The seed should live only on paper or on a physical metal backup when you choose to upgrade for durability.

Firmware Updates

Firmware updates include critical security patches and new features. Trezor Suite will prompt you if an update is available. Always follow the update wizard and verify on-device prompts before accepting an installation.

  1. Make sure your device is connected and fully charged (if applicable).
  2. Do not disconnect during the update process.
  3. Trezor Suite verifies firmware signatures — if verification fails, stop and contact support.

If you ever see unexpected firmware prompts or unofficial messages, disconnect and verify you are using the official website/app.

Backup — Recovery Seed Best Practices

Your recovery seed is the single most important item — it is the master key to your funds. Protect it accordingly.

Do

Don't

A correctly stored seed allows you to recover funds even if your device is lost or destroyed. Treat it like a bank vault key.

FAQ — Troubleshooting & Common Questions

My device isn’t recognized by my computer — what should I try?

Try a different USB cable and port, ensure Trezor Suite is up to date, reboot your computer, and check OS permissions. If the problem persists, consult Trezor support.

Can I restore a wallet to another Trezor?

Yes. Use the Recover wallet option on the other device and enter your recovery seed exactly.

What happens if I lose my device?

If you have your recovery seed, you can restore your wallet on any compatible device. Without the seed, funds are irretrievable. Store seeds securely.

Is my seed compatible with other wallets?

Yes — standard BIP39/BIP44 seeds are widely compatible, but some coin derivations and passphrase choices can create incompatibilities. Check compatibility docs before moving large amounts.
